Clinton-produced musical struggles to fill seats in Broadway run

A Broadway musical produced by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is having trouble filling seats during its key season.

“Suffs” is a musical about the 1913 suffragettes ahead of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. With about a month until the Tony Awards, “Suffs” reported an attendance of 81% the week ending on May 5, which was a slight increase from the week before. However, its gross revenue remained largely the same at just over $630,000 each week according to the Broadway League, a trade website for the theater industry.

This attendance record puts the musical in the bottom quarter of all Broadway shows for the week. Other shows are reporting more filled seats while having a much longer run on Broadway, since “Suffs” came onto the scene in 2022.

Back before its Broadway debut, the musical was reportedly sold out at the smaller Public Theater during its extended run. The cast features Tony-winner Nikki M. James and is up for six of its own Tony nominations. Along with Clinton, Malala Yousafzai has a producer credit.

The show’s website claims the entire female and nonbinary cast is “reaching across and against generational, racial, and class divides,” in their portrayal of “these brilliant flawed women” meant to “inspire us with the story of their hard-won victory in an ongoing fight.”

Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, have been busy with their production company, HiddenLight Productions. In Her Hands was the first documentary from the two and is available on Netflix after a Toronto International Film Festival premiere. It won the Emmy last year at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards, with each Clinton receiving her own statuette.

In Her Hands tells the story of Zarifa Ghafari, the first female mayor in Afghanistan from the 19 months before the United States evacuated the country through the fall of Kabul in August 2021.
