The View supports CNN debate allowing no audience and cutting mics

The View hosts supported the announcement of a CNN debate on June 27 between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, which allowed the demands from the Democratic presidential candidate to have no audience and the cutting of mics.

“Here’s what I really appreciate: Biden is saying, no audience. And that the mics must be cut once the time to answer the question has expired,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said on Wednesday morning. “I think it’s fair.”

She added, “I’m hoping this debate happens. I think it’s a good idea. It’s good for us.”

On Wednesday morning, Biden issued a challenge on social media for a presidential debate with his Republican rival.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal,” the president said on X.

Following his X post later in the morning, Biden declared that he had accepted an invitation from CNN for June 27 debate.

“Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,” Biden said.

Shortly after Biden’s social media post, CNN issued a statement announcing that both candidates had agreed to a debate that will be held in Atlanta.

“To ensure candidates may maximize the time allotted in the debate, no audience will be present. Moderators for the debate and additional details will be announced at a later date,” the news organization said in the release.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin shared Goldberg’s support for the debate and praised the move by Biden.

“It’s smart of Biden to get ahead of this by challenging Trump, and I think it’s a recognition that they’re neck-and-neck in the polls. I think the Biden team is recognizing maybe the trial isn’t breaking through in the way that having Donald Trump in every American living room answering tough policy questions head-to-head with him will remind them who he is, what his second term will look like,” Farrah Griffin said. “I think it’s critical that they do have these roadblocks in place; cutting off the mics is the most important, or it can descend into absolute chaos.”

Farah Griffin said she supports debates and believes it will help the undecided voter.

“I think it’s good for democracy,” she said.

Co-host Sunny Hostin agreed that the debate was “good for democracy” but claimed statistics show a lot of people “don’t watch the debates.”

“I will say this, I mean, Biden clearly has the edge. Every answer starts with, ‘Well, my opponent, who has been criminally convicted’ or ‘my opponent who has been twice impeached’ or ‘my opponent who is facing three other criminal trials.’ It’s gold,” Hostin said.

Behar said Trump will be come across as the “low information candidate that he is” while Biden will be the candidate who has been “a statesman with years under his belt in the Senate.”

At the end of the program, Goldberg announced that an additional presidential debate was planned to be moderated by ABC on Sept. 10.

The former president responded on social media to the debate news.

“It is my great honor to accept the CNN Debate against Crooked Joe Biden, the WORST PRESIDENT in the History of the United States and a true Threat to Democracy, on June 27th,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Likewise, I accept the ABC News Debate against Crooked Joe on September 10th.”
